Percent Off Formulas

Quick answer: A percent off discount subtracts a percentage of the original price from the starting price.

The calculator supports both regular and reverse discount workflows.

  • Discount Amount: Original Price × (Percent Off ÷ 100)
  • Sale Price: Original Price − Discount Amount
  • Tax Amount: Sale Price × (Tax Rate ÷ 100)
  • Final Total: Sale Price + Tax Amount
  • Reverse Original Price: Sale Price ÷ (1 − Percent Off ÷ 100)
Example: $100 at 25% off saves $25 and gives a sale price of $75.

FAQ

How do I find the sale price after a discount?

Multiply the original price by the discount percent to get the amount saved, then subtract that amount from the original price.

Do stores usually apply tax before or after the discount?

In most normal retail cases, tax is applied after the discount is taken off the original price.

Can I use this to work backward from a sale price?

Yes. Reverse mode estimates the original price when you know the sale price and the percent off.

What if the percent off is 100%?

A 100% discount makes the sale price zero. Reverse mode may be undefined at 100% because the original price cannot be solved normally from a zero remainder percentage.
