Sizes: Common icon sizes are 16, 24, 32, 48, 64, 128, 256 px. Pick a few most relevant to keep file size small.
Transparency: ICO supports transparency when using PNG-compressed entries. JPGs have no alpha; transparency only appears where the icon is not covered by your image (e.g., letterboxing in Contain).
Fit mode: Contain keeps the full image with possible padding; Cover crops to fill; Stretch distorts to square.
Quality: Use a high-resolution JPG; the tool downsizes cleanly per icon size.
Privacy: All processing is local; nothing is uploaded.

What's inside the ICO we build?

Standard ICO header + one entry per chosen size.
Each entry is a PNG image (modern, widely supported on Windows/macOS).
Width/height of 256 are written as 0 in the header (ICO spec shorthand for 256).
